AUSTRALIA SHINES THROUGH AT THE 2005 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL INDEPENDENT FILM & VIDEO FESTIVAL

Australia is the new Hollywood when it comes to short film production with local talent delivering its best work at the most prestigious festivals on the international circuit.  It may have taken hard work and perseverance however it appears that Australian short films are leading our film industry into a brighter future.

Dynamic young producers, Annmaree Bell and John Frank  are examples of the dedication and talent behind Australia's perceptive and enthralling short films being showcased on an international level. They have just returned from the USA where their film 'The Chess Set' enjoyed great success taking out two awards. Frank Wilson won 'Best Actor in a Short Film' and Stuart Wagstaff won 'Best Supporting Actor in the 2005 New York International Independent Film & Video Festival'.

The 18 minute short film is an all Australian production, funded by the producers and directed by talented young director, Alex Murawski. 'The Chess Set' tells the intimate story of an elderly headstrong man who attempts to avoid the grief of his best friends' death. However, strange happenings with a chess set lead him to an unexpected friendship and give him hope for the future.

"I think the Australian short film industry has commanded respect on an international level and this may be due to the unerring Australian instinct to connect with audiences and express hard-hitting emotional issues" comments Annmaree Bell.  "The real economic constraints short film producers are forced to work within do not allow time for needless scenes and dialogue - we are efficient and prolithic story tellers".

The producer's joy can be felt, they are thrilled just being about to make films and the international recognition is the icing on the cake.
